SpeedScan is a scanning keyboard interface designed to enable persons with disabilities access to IBM computers with either one or two switches. The program allows the user to invoke faster or slower scanning speeds during a scan to cut down the time it takes to activate the keys "far away". It incorporates top and bottom directional scanning and dual speed modes the user can activate during operation. The keyboard can be scanned from the top down, or from the bottom up. SCANNING: During scanning, the program highlights one row in the on-screen keyboard at a time. By clicking the switch when the scan gets to the row that has the desired key, the program switches to scanning across that row, one key at a time. When the scan reaches the desired key in that row, a second click of the switch selects it. After selecting a key, the system goes back to scanning rows again in the same direction as before. Row/column or linear scanning can be achieved with one switch; row/column, linear, or directed step scanning can be used with two switches. KEYBOARD LAYOUT: The layout of the keyboard for scanning is based on the frequency of letter and symbol use. The "space", Shift, and "erase" keys are made readily available. Layouts are optimized separately for linear and row/column scanning. In the optimized keyboard array, the fastest access for forward and reverse scan directions are indicated. Typing for spoken communication, for word processors, and for general computer operation have been considered. Word prediction, phrase prediction, and abbreviated expansion are incorporated in the most beneficial way. Keyboard images include QWERTY, alphabetic, key layout optimized for text entry based on letter frequencies or for linear scanning, and user-definable images. FEATURES: Other features of the program include an adjustable scanning speed to suit the user's needs; user selectable automatic key repeat rate; Phrase Prediction to allow input of phrases with one key stroke; abbreviation expansion to type phrases with a few keystrokes; automatic Common Word Prediction; automatic word endings; and automatic punctuation. COMPATIBILITY: For use on IBM and compatible or DOS-based computers including portables and desktops. The program will access all functions of the computer and most software; compatible with any type of display including LCD, monochrome, or color monitors. Any single- action switches with 3.5 millimeter plug connectors may be used. COMPONENTS: The SpeedScan system includes software, switch interface block, and manual. Switches not included.
