DISCONTINUED. (Verified 6/2003) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. The Peachtree Proportional Head Control System, model PHC-2, is a powered wheelchair controller designed to allow quadriplegics and other persons with disabilities the ability to move their wheelchairs by means of head control. The controller is embedded in a functional headrest and is operated by tilting the head in space in the desired direction. The degree of head tilt directly controls the speed of the wheelchair movement. This non-contact, fully proportional head control switch requires only limited forward, backward, and lateral head tilting capability. A repeatable range of motion of 2 inches head tilt from vertical in any direction is sufficient for good control. No retraction, extension, or rotation movements are necessary. The PHC-2 utilizes a remote, electronic, 2- dimensional head position sensing device to generate wheelchair control commands. A low level, high frequency electrical field emanating from the control unit located in the headrest provides the invisible contact between the user and the wheelchair. Normal inadvertent head movement caused by inertia is rejected by the control unit, even when operating on reasonable uneven surfaces. The size and shape of the headrest eliminates any interference with peripheral vision or face related tasks. The unit emulates a standard proportional joystick control unit and can directly plug into the wheelchair motor drive controller. In addition to wheelchair movement control, the unit will also accept head switch activation codes to allow the user to operate a power recliner and an environmental control unit (ECU) if equipped on the wheelchair. No modifications are required to the wheelchair. The unit features no moving or exposed parts, and has redundant circuitry for safety. WARRANTY: 2 years.
