Letter Formation with Playdough is a do it yourself activity designed for children with fine motor or learning disabilities to learn letter formation and spelling.

Technical Specifications:

Step One: Gather materials.

  • Extruder (one with three holes works best)
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Plastic scissors
  • *Note: An extruder creates uniform thin lines of play dough.

Step Two: Have the child spell their name and name the individual letters aloud.

Step Three: The teacher models how to make those letters on paper.

Step Four: The child copies the letters of his or her name on the piece of paper with the pencil.

Step Five: The child uses fine motor skills to press the playdough out of the extruder. The child uses the extruder and playdough to create all letters in their name. For example, a D being a “big line, big curve”.

Step Six: Use the scissors to cut extra playdough where applicable.
