FreeBoard is a software program that presents an image of the keyboard on the computer screen, over top of the display of an active program (most word processors, telecommunications programs, etc.). To type, the user moves a cursor onto the desired key on the on-screen keyboard and activates the key, either by holding the cursor on the key for a given length of time (time may be adjusted by the user) or by activating a single switch (in scanning mode). Possible input devices include mouse, track ball, joystick, or the FreeWheel optical head pointer (see entry). Automatic punctuation and word prediction features are included. Dictionaries of 700 and 3,000 common words are supplied, along with an assortment of keyboard images; both may be customized by the user. The image may be placed anywhere on the screen, and NEXT and BACK keys provide rapid switching between several active keyboard images. On-line help is included. FreeBoard may be used with the X-10 Powerhouse (see entry) to provide access to an environmental control system. COMPATIBILITY: For use on IBM PC computers.
