ECHO Sonar is a prototype navigation device developed for those without sight that uses echolocation to enhance auditory cues for the blind. It helps blind users navigate through their surrounding area, fit with the modern city rhythm, and increase the quality of one's life. Echolocation is a method of perceiving the world by emitting noises, then listening to the reflections of these noises off objects in the environment. The ECHO City System includes all levels in improvement of wayfinding and orientation in city environment for people with visual loss:
- short range (0 - 3 meters) – monitoring with personal ultrasound sonar - ECHO Sonar,
- middle range (up to 30 meters) – infra-red talking signs guidance - ECHO City beacons,
- global navigation (more than 30 meters) –interaction of ECHO Sonar with personal devices through Bluetooth interface.
The system does not exclude the use of tactical cane for control of safety surface zone (up to 1 meter).
