E-Talk Impact is a direct selection communicator designed for use by individuals with communication disabilities. The hardware for this communication aid is a dedicated tablet computer, the e-Talk CS 8400 system from The Great Talking Box Company (see separate entry), running Microsoft's Windows CE operating system. The device has a fingertip-sensitive color touchscreen for input, and can also take input through scanning or an external keyboard (not included). This communicator has digitized or synthesized (DECtalk) speech output through a built-in speaker and offers ten different pre-defined on-screen keyboards and one pre-defined symbol-based interface, including the full Mayer-Johnson PCS symbol set (see separate entry). A built-in interface editor allows users to create individualized symbol-based and phrase-based configurations. The device has 32 megabytes (MB) of built-in memory, two switch ports, a headphone port, and a serial keyboard port, and comes with a serial cable.
