The e-Talk GTA and e-Talk GTN are direct selection and symbolic communicators designed for use by people with communication, learning and speech disabilities. These handheld devices resemble a small tablet computer. Each model features a backlit poly-silicon (TP) 800 x 600 touch screen with anti-glare that can be read in a variety of indoor and outdoor lighting conditions. The GTA and GTN also have a built-in microphone and an internal speaker with variable volume, and there are microphone input and sound output ports for use with external speaker(s) or an external microphone. Both models come with Saltillo Chat software and SymbolStix symbols standard. Pictures can also be imported from computers for use as symbols. The communicators use the Saltillo software with Acapela (GTA) or Neo Speech (GTN) speech that facilitates symbol- and/or text-based communication, the creation of new pages and vocabulary, variation of the number of buttons on a page, location of specific symbols, and customization of colors and spacing. Clinicians and therapists can also create page sets entirely on a computer and download vocabulary to the user’s e-Talk GTA or GTN. In addition to the touch screen, the user can utilize any USB input device (including USB keyboards), single- or double-switch scanning, a head pointer, auditory scanning or the customizable on-screen keyboard to select cells illustrated by individual or combined symbols, pictures, or text, or by spoken sounds; to spell words, including letter and word prediction features; to choose phrases; and to write sentences in order to produce voice output. To connect to other devices, the e-Talk GTA and GTN have a USB port; and Ethernet port; a VGA monitor port; two 3.5-millimeter switch ports; and an XD card slot. Each unit includes a PXA270 CPU with 1-gigabyte memory at 620 megahertz with a Windows CE Embedded operating system. It boots up in less than 40 seconds and shuts down in less than a minute, and there is a programmable power-down mode. OPTIONS: Widgit and Mayer-Johnson symbols are available for additional cost.
