The Calming Lavender Scented Playdough is an essential item for the Calm Down Kit (see product) by Chaos and the Clutter designed for children with anxiety disorders to calm them down. It is a do-it-yourself product and can be made easily. To make, follow the following instructions.

Technical Specifications:

Step One: Gather materials.

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 3 Tbsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 Tbsp. lavender or 3 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 2 cups water
  • lavender food coloring
  • glitter (optional – artist uses purple because it is a calming color)

Step Two: Mix the dry ingredients including the lavender together in a pot and stir in the oil, water, and food coloring.

Step Three: Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, being sure to scrape the sides and bottom. Cook until dough forms a ball. Remove from heat.

Step Four: Place it on a piece of wax paper. Knead.

Step Five (optional): Add the glitter and knead. Let cool.

Step Six: Store in an airtight container or in a resealable bag.

A mixer can also be used as follows:

Step Two: Put the dry ingredients into the mixer. Add the oil and food coloring and begin mixing with the flat beater (the one for making dough).

Step Three: Add 2 cups of boiling water and continue to mix until a playdough texture is achieved.

Step Four: Take the dough out of the mixer and knead for one minute.

Step Five: If the artist is adding glitter, add it at this stage and knead to combine it throughout the dough.
