DISCONTINUED. (Verified 9/1999) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. BlinkSwitch is a blink detection switch device that allows persons with severe neuromuscular conditions and spinal cord injuries to communicate and to control their environment. BlinkSwitch consists of a lightweight blink sensor that attaches to any eyeglass frame, and a separate, microprocessor based control unit. The switch monitors eyelid position by means of safe, non-contact infrared beams, and communicates with the control unit via a thin cable. The control unit allows the blink sensor to "learn" and update user blink characteristics and to differentiate between voluntary and involuntary blinks. BlinkSwitch will shut off if the user's eyes are closed for an extended period of time. The BlinkSwitch enables the user to operate household items such as lights, hands-free phones, computers, or other environmental control units. It will activate attendant alarms when combined with the X-10 POWERHOUSE modules. This device was designed to interface directly with "ViewKey" or other types of "scanning" software utilizing single switch mechanisms. BlinkSwitch can be used with any brand of computer, with appropriate interface hardware.
