DISCONTINUED. (Verified 09/2008) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. The ALVA Satellite 544 is a refreshable braille display designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. It can be used in the office, at school, or at home. The unit has a 44-cell piezoelectric display and users can elect to use all forty-four cells as reading cells or to use three status cells and forty reading cells. Other configuration options include selectable sound schemes and placement of status cells and keypad functions. Different settings can be saved and loaded and the unit includes self-test facilities. The front side layout includes two satellite keypads with six keys each for navigation and operation. The back side layout includes the on/off switch, one nine-pin serial port, two downstream USB ports for connection of USB devices, and one upstream USB port for connecting to a computer. The system comes with long and short USB and serial cables, a power supply cable, a combination backpack/carrying case, two keyboard supports, Velcro attachment strips for laptops, ALVA Satellite drivers on CD-ROM, and a manual in print and on diskette. A braille manual is available on request. COMPATIBILITY: For use with IBM and compatible computers. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Windows 98/95/NT. POWER: Uses a built-in 110 - 240 volt /12 watt power adapter or ten replaceable and rechargeable double-A batteries with an operation time of 15 hours. When plugged into alternating current (AC), the unit will fully energize rechargeable batteries in about 3 hours. DIMENSIONS (HxLxW): 0.9 x 12.2 x 11.4 inches. WEIGHT: 4.6 pounds.
