AdVOCAte+ With Environmental Control is a direct selection and scanning communicator and environmental control unit designed for use by indviduals with communication or speech disabilities together with severe physical disabilities or spinal cord injury. This portable unit provides environmental control capabilities with recorded speech output for communication. It has the same speech output and auditory prompt features as the adVOCAte communicator (see separate entry), but in addition has trainable infrared output to learn the control codes of home entertainment equipment, and a library of infrared codes to operate GEWA and Possum environmental control peripherals. The unit can be accessed by direct selection using either the unit's keypad or up to four external switches. Scanning uses high legibility LEDs or auditory prompts; scanning modes include single-switch automatic scanning, single-switch inverse scanning, two-switch inverse scanning, and two-switch step scanning. The keyboard can be configured for 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16 locations on five levels, including four levels with single selection and one level with key linking. The unit can record up to 16 minutes of messages, with up to 16 seconds recording per location. Also included are two built-in alarms to attract attention in case of emergency.
