DISCONTINUED. (Verified 8/1999) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. Able2Speak 1.0 is a scanning communicator program designed to allow persons with cognitive disabilities the capability to communicate using an IBM-compatible PC with minimal effort and fustration. This program runs on the graphical Microsoft Windows environment and allows anyone who is able to operate a switch (i.e. mouse button, eyeblink detector, or a key on the keyboard) to synthesize speech and compose text. A basic feature of this program is that it learns as it is used, building an expanding database with every use and storing all saved text in an ASCII text file. The software also includes large, easy to read letters, a "current thought" window that also displays the previous five phrases, and a voice command switch that saves commands alphabetically on a sound file. The program has a two-level menu with a "help" screen (announced by audio when activated) that the system automatically checks every few seconds so that emergency notification is always close at hand. COMPATIBILITY: For use on IBM PC and compatible computers.
